In January 2018, Hayat Sende held a workshop on Care Leavers' Employment Opportunities, with participants from the public, private and civic sectors, as well as the involvement of young care leavers. The aim of the workshop was to evaluate the current support mechanisms for young people preparing to leave care and transition into society, with a specific focus on employment opportunities.
The group discussed challenges of legislation; education level, adaptation to working life; monitoring and support mechanisms in after-care. Outcomes are captured in the final workshop report, alongside analysis of the current situation for care leavers’ and examples of good practice gathered through our international research.
As a result, the Turkish government is now making new regulations on care leavers' access to employment. One such regulation will see the government support young care leavers to find jobs not only in the public sector, as they do already, but also in the private sector, by covering their social security payments for the first five years of employment, giving companies a financial incentive to recruit care leavers.
